Do you remember those old western movies where people play cards on a rickety table puffing and drinking as they go along? Most of the time, the way one character puffs his cigarette or drinks his beer gives him away about what hand he's got. Sooner or later they start shooting at each other claiming the other fellow cheated.
Smoking is allowed in any land-based casino and it used to be that all casinos don't have any prohibitions on smoking. But things started to change along the way as the years go by. Since a healthy life-style has taken over and has become increasingly popular casinos decided to capitalize on this growing trend. And we now have to practice proper poker etiquette when dealing with the smoking and non-smoking area.
One thing you might like to note is that not all casinos have that huge non-smoking area. Some casinos have either reduced the original size of that area on the floor or have taken it out completely. It's all but a question of how much profit can be made.
Nowadays, the gaming area in casinos is divided into these two sections. There are many health conscious casino players nowadays. In fact, the World Series of Poker is also non-smoking! But smoking isn't really out of place in a casino, why would there be the absence prohibitions if that were the case? The truth of the matter is that with proper etiquette we can still respect the other player's air space.
To smoke or not to smoke during a game of poker isn't totally just a question of respect for the other player's air space. It is also a question of how another player safeguards his health. Someone wisely put in once that no one has the right to jeopardize your health when playing poker.
If you're a smoker and the type that can't resist puffing a cigarette when the pressure builds up then you better stay on the smoking side of the floor. But if the action seems better on the non-smoking section then you better hold it up for a while and enjoy the action without a cigarette. It's a good way to keep out of trouble and comments from other players who prefer not to smoke while playing poker.
The same also goes for non-smokers, if you're interested to play on the other side of the fence, then you should be able to abide all the smoke. It's all about mutual respect for other players on the floor. But just in case you really can't stand all that smoking, then one good option is to play online.
Whether you play on the smoking or non-smoking areas of the casino floor, just remember to practice poker etiquette and be respectful of the other players.
